Piezoelectric ceramics are a type of functional ceramic material capable of interconverting mechanical and electrical energy—a phenomenon known as the piezoelectric effect. In addition to piezoelectricity, these materials also exhibit dielectric and elastic properties. They are widely used in applications such as medical imaging, acoustic sensors, acoustic transducers, and ultrasonic motors. The functionality of piezoelectric ceramics relies on the piezoelectric effect: when mechanical stress is applied, the centers of positive and negative charges within the material shift relative to one another, causing polarization and the appearance of bound charges of opposite signs on the material’s surfaces. Due to their high sensitivity, piezoelectric ceramics are primarily used to manufacture ultrasonic transducers, underwater acoustic transducers, electroacoustic transducers, ceramic filters, ceramic transformers, ceramic frequency discriminators, high-voltage generators, infrared detectors, surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, electro-optic devices, and piezoelectric gyroscopes.
Piezoelectric ceramic wafers are simple, lightweight electrical components. They are extensively utilized due to several advantages: high sensitivity, the absence of stray magnetic fields, no requirement for copper wiring or magnets, low cost, low power consumption, and suitability for mass production. They are well-suited for the transmission and reception of ultrasonic and infrasonic waves; larger piezoelectric ceramic wafers can also be employed to detect pressure and vibration. Their operating principle leverages the reversibility of the piezoelectric effect: by applying an audio-frequency voltage to the material, it can be made to produce sound.
